Chapter 14

“I am made glad by your decision to stay. I, too, believe this to be of benefit to us both.”

“We’re sorry for taking so long to decide. This world is different from what we’d expected.” We were all subdued while Mac spearheaded the talks on the players’ part. The orc matriarch rode beside our cart again, this time joined by Huth’Ga. No one was willing to bet that Mac’s threats had worked, and so there was no time to pause for a full council meeting.

“Is that not the way of any world, in the end?” Hen’Darl agreed. As with me, she gave no impression of smugness, nor of the casual attitude she’d adopted with us days before. This was a negotiation of alliance, after all, and both parties wanted to be certain of the terms.

“Are there any other concerns that need to be addressed?” she asked.

“As long as we’re able to do what we need to level, I’m good,” Katz answered.

Varba and the others captured had been immediately on board, having experienced firsthand just how precarious our place in The Boundless was. Katz had still wavered, unwilling to be tied down, until I’d introduced everyone to Kipper and his ability to search out dungeons. The others’ alliance wasn't equivalent to the agreement I'd made, but it did mean they’d be around for a while. I did my best not to think of what might happen once they decided to leave. I was now an honorary Hearthsteader, for all that entailed.

In some ways none of that mattered, though. Earthling and Hearthsteader, we were now united in our search for a new home. Somewhere to take root and flourish would be nice, but the experiences of the past day had lowered our expectations to match those of the orcs. We’d take someplace secure.

“This is to the benefit of all,” Huth’Ga agreed, nodding to Katz. “If we are to face threats as one, we must strengthen each other.” The war mother held her objections in check, but I could read it in every line of her.

“Then it is decided!” Hen’Darl proclaimed.
